A Commitment to Community: The Mt. Hehuan Hiking Project
This month, we are excited to share an inspiring story of community engagement and corporate social responsibility. KONFU Enterprise Co., Ltd. had the privilege of supporting students from Zuojhen Junior High School in their ambitious hiking trip to the main peak (3,417 meters) and north peak (3,422 meters) of Mt. Hehuan, one of Taiwan's most iconic mountains.
Fostering Resilience and Health
The initiative was born from the vision of KONFU’s founder, Mr. Char-Fu Shea, a passionate hiker himself. Recognizing the challenges faced by the school, including a student overweight rate of 34% in 2014, Mr. Shea collaborated with then-principal Yi-Shing Tsai to promote a healthier lifestyle. The school introduced a 3km morning run campaign, and the Mt. Hehuan hike was established as the ultimate goal for their training.
Mr. Shea fully endorsed the plan, providing essential equipment such as trekking poles, backpacks, raincoats, and headlamps to ensure the students' safety and comfort. Before embarking on the journey, students engaged in comprehensive preparation, learning about local flora and fauna, equipment maintenance, and first aid.
A Tradition of Perseverance
From 2014 to 2021, the Mt. Hehuan hike became an annual tradition at Zuojhen Junior High School, undertaken regardless of weather conditions. Every student participated, demonstrating incredible perseverance. One student, tasked with carrying the school flag, insisted on completing the challenging 4-hour walk despite physical difficulties, embodying the spirit of the project.
Transforming Lives and a Community
The impact of this initiative extended beyond physical fitness. In a region facing population decline, Zuojhen Junior High School saw its student numbers grow from just 30 to 80 within four years. Principal Tsai noted that for many disadvantaged students with low self-esteem from academic struggles, conquering a mountain was a powerful experience. It taught them that with persistence, they could reach any peak, even at their own pace. This project is a testament to KONFU's belief in empowering youth and strengthening local communities.
