A Living History of Taiwan's Carbide Industry

Wu Fangtsun stands as one of the most senior and respected employees at KONFU Enterprise Co., Ltd. His journey into the carbide industry began by chance in the 1970s, a pivotal era when Taiwan’s economy was transitioning from labor-intensive sectors to more capital-intensive and high-tech industries. At the age of 20, Mr. Wu joined a Taiwan-Japan joint venture, where he was trained by Japanese technicians to manufacture wire drawing dies.

Forged Through Rigorous Training

The training was incredibly demanding. Mr. Wu recalls the difficulty of working in a carbide factory, where he had to handle freshly made, still-hot carbide parts with his bare hands to drill holes. Safety protocols of the time prohibited gloves to prevent them from being caught in machinery, a rule that led to him skinning his hands raw multiple times a week. The Japanese consultants were strict perfectionists, demanding absolute precision. Even a minute deviation in a 0.18 mm wire drawing pin meant starting over. However, it was this arduous experience that forged his expertise and laid the foundation for his future contributions to the carbide tool sector.

Mastering the Craft of Tooling

Through perseverance, Mr. Wu became an expert in wire drawing and head forming dies, gaining a profound understanding of tool modification and optimization. His exceptional proficiency caught the eye of KONFU’s founder, Mr. Char-Fu Shea, who invited him to join the company. Mr. Shea often referred to Wu as a "living history of Taiwan’s carbide industry," a title that reflects his invaluable knowledge and experience.
